‘Russian’ Beluga Whale Spotted Off Sweden — Norwegian Officials
The white beluga whale first spotted off Norway’s coastline four years ago, which European sources alleged might have come from a Russian military facility, has been spotted near Sweden, say Norwegian authorities.
Hvaldimir, as the whale has become affectionately known, was last week spotted in the inner Oslo fjord where the giant USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier was briefly stationed.
“He is a lonely little whale who hopes to find other white whales that he can hang out with,” said Sebastian Strand, a marine biologist with Onewhale, an NGO created solely to protect Hvaldimir. “He probably wants to have a family but has swum a little wrong.”
