Are you saying that in order to use it, you should download every image just to see what actual dimensions they are? A 50px wide by 1200px high image is within spec?!
The already existing media:thumbnail tag gives full image dimensions. It is a spec in production, consumed by YouTube (and thus a 1024x768 tile is available for thousands of shows). We have not just reinvented the wheel here, we’ve invented a worse wheel which isn’t even round.
