Generally you don't need this, but could be good for when you, for example, had a channel force-closed and the closing transaction was confirmed, but then the next transaction that supposedly sends funds back to your main wallet is not confirming and you can't RBF or CPFP it from CLN or other weird situations.
Also for some reason my old Lightning seed had many UTXOs with a total relatively big amount of money from 2019 UTXOs in it that me and my current CLN were completely oblivious about, so it might be worth trying even if everything is ok with your node. I wonder how many other people lost money like that.
quoting nevent1q…ggfeHow to recover funds from a broken CLN node:
- grab this code: https://git.fiatjaf.com/cln-xpriv
- run it (compiling from source with Go so there is no risk I will steal your coins) passing the path to your hsm-secret as the argument
- import the resulting xpriv (or xpub if you just want to see) on Sparrow using the derivation path "m/"
- done
This will only find funds that are sitting in your CLN main wallet, not funds from channels or anything like that.
