But when it comes to public reaction, I also don't think such a denial would be any less consequential than a ruling. They'd still piss off Donald Trump's supporters, some of whom might react violently.
In that frame, the safest thing they could do would be to rule in Trump's favor. They haven't generally been doing that so I think there's a decent chance they follow the plain language.
I think the argument that they'll have little choice but to hear the case is probably right. I'll be surprised if Colorado is the only state to kick him off the ballot.
