I just had a physical trauma response to reading this. My parents' solution to my aversion to swimming (and therefore not knowing how to swim) when I was a kid was to force me to join the boys competitive swim team. It was horrible, the boys were horrible, and the changing rooms were awful. I tried to find corners behind lockers or whatever I could find or if I was lucky enough for the place to have bathroom stalls and try to wait until the showers were empty.
