Up until he Lewiston tragedy, Maine prided itself on having lots of guns but little gun violence.

What they were experiencing wasn't gun safety or "responsible gun ownership". It was LUCK. Pure, dumb luck.

Yesterday, Maine's luck ran out. It could run out again at any moment. Was Robert Card a responsible gun owner before pulling the trigger and then not one when his madness overtook his reason?

That's not terribly reassuring for the majority of Americans who DON'T own guns. We always have to rely on "responsible gun owners" staying responsible and not, say, losing focus for a second. Just long enough for an accident to happen.

Or a moment of uncheckable rage.

Remember Nancy Lanza? She thought she wa a "responsible gun owner", too. Right up to the moment her son Adam Lanza shot her to death with one of her own legal weapons - and then went to Sandy Hook Elementary.

"Responsible" one moment totally irresponsible the next.

That was the same luck Maine rode all the way. That's all it was.

Luck.

That's all "gun culture" is. Luck v death.
