Step 1: drag video into handbrake.
Step 2: remove audio track and subtitles track, just compress the video
Step 3: only tab you need to give a shit about is the video tab (Framerate same as source and constant framerate, encoder preset medium)
Step 3a: enable avg bitrate and set whatever bitrate will get the video down to a certain size (e.g. I torrented a 7 gig copy of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid; minus audio it's a 6.1 gig video with 9000 kbps bitrate, so I set the more than half the bitrate to 3500.
Step 4: encode
Step 5: drag newly encoded video and original copy into MKVtoolnix
Step 6: make a new mkv by using the video track from your newly encoded video and the audio, subtitles and other metadata from the original file; disable any audio tracks or subtitles you don't need
And that's it. Congratulations, you've now condensed a <5gb torrent into something around 2.5gb.

quoting nevent1q…elm7Learning how to re-encode movies has saved so much on both storage space and also made it easier to run movies that, in their raw torrented form, have ridiculously high bitrates. Also means you can just remove 400mb, 6 channel audio tracks for foreign languages that you'll never listen to.
