The famous 'parson-naturalist' Gilbert White lived at Selborne, which is where I came across this very old iron bench that was slowly being consumed by an even older tree. Left to their own devices, the trees will eventually consume all the works of humanity. It's a nice place to sit though.
Interestingly, Gilbert White is credited with both the first recorded use of the word 'golly', and the first use of 'x' to represent a kiss in a letter.
