The entire idea is asinine.
"We made more government bureaucracy to fix our government bureaucracy problem"
(yeah yeah apparently it's not going to be a real department, but it's the idea that's the problem)
While I'm very well versed in the criticisms of the administrative state, I can't help but feel like this is less of a "line-item" investigation and more of a way to quickly empower nefarious forces.
Years ago I said if you wanted to actually reduce waste in government you would build bottom-up feedback mechanisms within the bureaucracy.
It's the front-line workers who see a majority of the problems the higher-ups love to omit from reports to their bosses.
But nobody in power wants to put the public in charge of solving problems, so we'll always get bizarre half-measures like this.
