I shied away from M4 for years because I did not want to learn yet another weird language just for macro processing. But recently I had to template some files and I didn't want to write yet another Ruby or Python program with a templating library and the ubiquitous dependency issues that go with it. Turns out that M4 is like Make: weird, but available everywhere and quite useful. I'm definitely using more M4 in the future.
