today I learned that in England, civil weddings and non-Anglican, Jewish or Quaker weddings must all be held with open doors for members of the public, not so people can object to sham marriages but instead to attempt to prevent them being used as cover for meetings for political sedition, a hangover from the Toleration Act 1688.
