Many believe gambling is a bad thing because if you get a taste of it, eventually, you’re going to get addicted to it.
This will end up with you being broke.
In order to protect citizens from this ‘poison’, many support making gambling illegal.
However, truth be told, in practice, even if gambling is illegal, I don’t think there’s anyone who would be willing to confidently say this approach is effective in preventing people from gambling.
It’s just like in the old days of USA, where alcohol consumption was illegal.
Despite alcohol being illegal, people still managed to get their hands on alcohol.
They might have to do so secretly but they did it.
Moreover, since alcohol was illegal, this created an incentive for alcohol producers to make alcohol more addictive.
This made alcohol consumers more willing to go through all the trouble to secretly get their hands on alcohol.
In other words, even if the law was passed in order to ‘help the people’, in the end, people still drank alcohol.
And the alcohol they consumed caused more harm to their health than the alcohol made during the time when alcohol wasn’t illegal.
I think gambling is kinda like alcohol.
Outlawing gambling cannot prevent people from gambling.
We have the internet. People can easily start gambling.
And even if certain kinds of gambling are considered illegal in Thailand (e.g. poker), we humans can certainly come up with newer forms of gambling that aren’t considered illegal in Thailand’s laws (e.g. games with Gasha).
I think we need to accept that laws cannot prevent people from gambling.
Furthermore, the laws stunt economic growth.
If gambling isn’t illegal, you can bet that a huge gambling industry will pop up in the country.
A lot more people are going to want to visit Thailand.
This will create jobs for a lot of Thai people.
And to be honest, a sizable chunk of people who turn to gambling do so because they’re poor and they don’t see a way to get themselves out of poverty.
Especially in a country like Thailand whose economy has been stagnating for at least a decade now.
So, if we legalize gambling and our economy starts growing, this group of people will be less likely to turn to gambling.
Of course, if we legalize gambling, there will be people addicted to gambling and losing all their money.
But even if we make gambling illegal, there will still be people addicted to gambling and losing all their money.
Better to legalize gambling and create more jobs for the people, right?
At the very least, if someone’s addicted to gambling and lose all their money because of gambling, he or she has a lot of jobs waiting for him or her to jump right in and start earning some cash (since the economy is booming due to the legalization of gambling).
