Complex I of the electron transport chain is a primary target of cigarette smoke-induced mitochondrial dysfunction.

Cigarette smoke also targets ANT, thus inhibiting the exchange of ADP/ATP across the inner mitochondrial membrane.

We demonstrate that concurrent inhibition of the electron transport chain and ADP/ATP exchange is a primary mechanism by which cigarette smoke induces mitochondrial dysfunction and bioenergetic deficits in skeletal muscle.
