My painful lesson that I can't benefit from but others can: Publish your first work(s) under a pen name. It can't hurt, but not doing it can.
It's safer to learn and make mistakes with a name that can be ditched if things go poorly. Real name? Not so easy to set aside. Plus, it might not be about missteps, it could just come down to separating works by genre.
A pen name is a sandbox for those new to writing and publishing.
