The origin of the term "conspiracy theory" is disputed. Some sources suggest that the phrase was first used in 1909 to describe the defense of accused anarchists in a criminal trial, while others trace its usage back to the 1850s. The first popular use of the phrase seems to have come in the late 1960s, when it was used to label any explanation of a political, social, or historical event that involved a group of conspirators.
