Here is a short list of games I’ve been playing this week. I got sick again and do I have had more time than usual to play vidya.
Octopath Traveler II
Very kino game. Only have just started the game, but the music, story and gameplay are exactly what old school JRPG fans want. Only thing I dislike is that the story segments are a bit long. At the same time, the writing is good. Looking forward to playing this one. A more comprehensive review will be in store.
Dead Cells
A lot of fun to just run and see how far you can get. Takes a lot of cues from the metroidvania genre, especially the Castlevania games. (Obvious given the latest Castlevania themed DLC). Definitely the kind of game you can junp into if you don’t want to be too seriously invested.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
I’ve completed this game three times in the past week. (Only takes about two hours when you knownhow to sequence break) I really like this series and this game is my favorite. Easiest game in the whole series. Good starting point if you have never been into the Metroidvania genre.
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Harder than Aria of Sorrow, but a much larger game imo. Probably the hest GBA Castlevania. Maybe its because both games have easy dash cancelling, which makes moving around the castle feel very good. Symphony of the Night has the same deal with shield dashing. Worst part is how jank the OST sounds. I know that its “Harmony of Dissonance” and I like the songs, but conpare it to Circle of the Moon which was a GBA launch titile and sounds and looks much better. (Then again, on actual hardware washed out colors aid visibility, just doesn’t look good on modern screens tbh).
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
The black sheep of the GBA vanias. Not even considered canon by Iga… but I will defend this game. On my RG 351P this game looks great. Hell it even looks great on my DS Lite. Just kind if hard to see on actual hardware, but this was a GBA launch title. The Kobe team really did a good job with this one. There is some jank to how you move, but once you get used to the controls you can fly through stages like any other good Castlevania. I really think music and visuals is where this game shines among the GBA vanias. Too bad the DSS Card system is easily broken, because it really us a neat system. (Basically you can glitch to have all of the abilities from the earliest part if the game). If you can keep yourself honest, this is a rewarding game.
Can’t you notice a theme with my game selections? These are all games I can play on a handheld (also mostly metroidvanias) and very comfy as I have been sick. Wanted to write about each of these games as a full blogpost, but I will be very busy when I get well.
