forgive the neckbeard philosophizing but it sounds like a failure mode of "norm enforcement by adding distribution friction"-- once someone has enough followers on enough servers, there choice of server doesn't protect them from the 10% of internet users who are garbage, and going viral here is no different than going viral on usenet or today's xitter
