If you are older than 30 years old and have any kind of assets… write a will, sign it in the presence of two witnesses (or whatever your state requires THIS IS CRUCIAL) and file it or whatever. Do this even if it feels unnecessary because you’re hale and hearty. Unless you want to spite your next of kin. In that case, disregard.
I say this in year n+1 of probate hell.
PS: You should also update the will if it has been a while or if your assets change significantly
