Also, intertia. It isn't like you'd be having problems with a 2nd gen chromecast or a chromebook audio because you just bought one yesterday.
Back at the beginning of the android era, it looked like google was the one to beat in terms of open products. My first smartphone back in 2011 was a galaxy s1, and I think I got it all the way to cyanogen Android J before I gave it away and replaced it with an S3, which immedieately got cyanogen itself.
It appeared that chromecast was going to be a platform potentially as open in the beginning as well (we're past the golden age of hackability in general, sadly)
Obviously, at some point Google's no longer going to be an option, and I'll have to further expand my empire of dirt, just as I replaced most of my streaming services with jellyfin and most big tech websites with the fediverse, and cloud services with nextcloud. Thankfully, FOSS solutions have gotten really friggin good lately.
We'll have to wait and see. Maybe I end up just using some fanless sign PCs and a wiimote.
