Following up on this. I've now switched to this pattern for defining environment variables. My bashrc is greatly reduced now. Some environment variables couldn't be moved however because they require some scripting. #systemd has environment generators, but it doesn't look in $HOME for them for the user service manager, which is really unfortunate. Almost tempted to try my hand at contributing to systemd if they would take the PR.
