With everything there is in Linux these days, with the options of repositories, flatpak, snap, user repos, containers, etc. With the variety of kernels that are easy to install or compile... I don't understand how a common user can "break the system." Even being a novice, if you pay a little attention, Linux is easy to learn, maintain and use. There are base distributions and many based on the main ones, with very easy-to-use installers, with a lot of software available.
You have to be very stupid, very useless to not be able to handle that.
My seven year old niece uses Debian and is learning Scratch.
