Because I like minimal processes tmux has been attractive but I've stuck to plain old SSH as it's mostly about controlling machines and I prefer short lived sessions because it's an operational process.
But if I run a remote machine as a long term desktop then I rely on NoMachine. Then it's just another workspace on my main computer with all the things.
If I need long term running things that don't have to produce 'visible' results then they quickly become services.
