One of the startling things has been the proliferation of soldiers on the streets of Playa del Carmen but I totally get it. There is trouble in Paradise. Often the way. The link between beautiful parts of the world and drug cartels, seems to exist in so many places; especially this part of America. This is why people encourage the use of official taxis and tour guides; not just to make extra money but your corpse on the beach, is not what their government needs; bad for tourism.
I did feel a little ill at ease yesterday when approached by people along Avenida Quinta. Were they genuinely trying to interest us in their hand-crafted souvenirs or was it the front for something darker? More sinister? The guys dressed as superheroes, what the fuck were they up to? Fun bar promoters or worse?
Maybe I’m overthinking but sometimes it’s better to be brutally obtuse than too game for it; something more than you might have bargained for.
This article made for harrowing reading and I wouldn’t want to share it with my mum or she’d fly out and rescue my wife, myself and our two friends. She doesn’t own a plane but would commandeer one if given half the chance.

If only the military could just burn the cocaine plantations in the Americas.
