if you read the license agreements they make you accept you will see that they arrogate your copyright and thus claim the right to edit (or withhold publication) of your messages
in actual fact, they are not communications systems, they are media, that's why they call it "social media"
they stand between all of you and separate you from each other
one of the key ethical positions of most nostr clients and writers of opinions about it is that they don't censor
there is probably an interesting legal angle we get to grab onto because of this - telephony and postal services are bound by rules that specifically DON'T allow them to tamper with your communications (or monitor them)
this means that nostr apps and clients and websites that get into hot water over "hate speech" and other similar kinds of stupid laws can disclaim responsibility (and copyright) of messages by asserting that they are a public utility and not a platform/media company
