"Putin has -- for now -- more power over the average Russian, and Xi more power over the average Chinese than our government has over us."
Is this still true?
I hear a lot of people saying so but I don't have any friends in Russia or China to confirm or deny.
If I had to guess, I'd say perhaps the power a POTUS wields over individual Americans may be more in the form of the carrot than the stick. At this point, I'm not even sure how much power a POTUS wields over the regulators within his own executive branch.
Case in point, by some weird glitch in the matrix I was somehow able to throw a grenade and fire a machine gun a full year before I was legally able to purchase a beer. Apparently this anomaly was the result of federal highway money used to convince states to raise their legal drinking ages to 21.
Indeed it seems more and more as if our state governments have become little more than 'house slaves' on a federal plantation.
