I like your enthusiasm for a more tightly knit open discussion platform with academic research. It certainly would be more interesting and dynamic if discussions were open to a broader community. Inspiration can even sometimes come from "non-experts". Academic communities may or may not even be on legacy social media, even then only some people might be interested/have time to commit to social media. It's difficult to commit in the first place, and even harder to switch thereafter because the social graph is prisoner to whatever platform.
