I am tempted to suggest ICB just to be from out in left field.
But y'know, a lot of OpenBSD devs did (and maybe still do?) use it.
sshchat isn't my top choice (which would be SILC) but sshchat definitely has an ICB++ vibe to it IMHO.
If, OTOH, you want something with so-called "message persistence" like the kids (they aren't cool, but they're definitely not graybeards) then I dunno, Matrix and uhhh maybe Matrix are it that are at least libre/free open source?
(OFC, you could just use IRC and psybnc and still have message persistence, but don't tell anyone that, also don't tell anyone that you could use psybnc to have encrypted chat on IRC networks even if they are so old they don't support TLS tunneling.)
