I remember the first time I read Dracula as a teen, and being rather incredulous about the number of letters being exchanged every day between the Harkers and Vsn Helsing, St one point there were 3 or 4 letters each way every day, and none crossed over.
Almost as incredulous as reading about the speed of train journeys from London to Cornwall in the Sherlock Holmes novels - it's not that much further to Manchester from London, yet the modern (at the time - mid to late 1980s) saw the Northern route taking around 3 times as long as the Western route.
