i'm reading an interesting legend about how the "kusarigama" was developed. there's no historical evidence but it is said that a peasant farmer improvised by attaching his sickle to a weight with a chain to defeat an attacking samurai. this legend apparently led to the chain sickle becoming a commonly practiced weapon that could defeat samurai.
watching this fight and I can see why it was the popular weapon of choice for a peasant to go up against a sword
