But remember if you tamper with a life safety device it could effect insurance payout if it is discovered. If you live as a tenant in a larger building i would imagine you could face charges if someone is hurt, or at the very least a lawsuit. If you remove a smoke detector, it will most likely cause a system trouble that will cause building maintanance to "come check it out" Most homes , at least in the US, have hardwired 120VAC smoke detectors. These are local alarm only and are not monitored. If you have a security system installed they will often offer smoke detectors as an add on.
