"It was 20 years ago today/All the power just went away."
This shot was taken a few minutes after the cascading Northeast Blackout hit New York City on 14 Aug 2003.
The black smoke behind the Empire State Building is probably the ConEd plant at 14th Street shutting down. Something I read at the time suggested that power plants may need to bring a backup generator online to shut down cleanly, so that smoke may be from the backup starting up. Nothing was actually on fire.
