Can someone explain how mastodon and something like #kbin or #lemmy federated? I get I can comment on a post, but how do I follow the equivalent of a subreddit? For example I followed

I get that I can follow individuals, but doesn't really make sense to me in that context. I want to subscribe to the magazine/topic/subreddit.
