Part of the reason why he is how he is is because the evil force shows him a vision of each death just before he tries to go off to sleep at night. He then tries to call his friend in the vision and just as the friend picks up the phone, the evil force pushes the friend out of the window and Putin has to listen to the scream as the friend plunges to his death.
