Believe it or not, this is the same scene (I stood just in front of the sign shown in the first photo to take the second photo). While this lakeside reservoir (1) is now completely dried up (2), the drainage field just across the trail is actually still marshy enough to accommodate ducks and other waterbirds, and the nearby lake is welcoming the incoming river, which was freed by the removal of some major local dams to set both the river and the salmon free.
