You might be overestimating how much can be done in a year. Most projects don’t get a whole year’s worth of development done, because people work on them in their spare time and it’s disheartening to see the minuscule progress making everything even slower. Building something for free and supposedly for fun (or why would you?) makes it less likely to be polished and well made.
