Damus has supported custom emoji reactions for a long time. I personally think likes/reactions and zaps both have their place. Reactions can convey a specific emotion or just a simple acknowledgment that a note has been seen.
As someone who isn’t trying to be a creator or influencer, I think in many cases a thoughtful comment can be the best form of engagement. Many of the most interesting discussions on Nostr happen in the comments.
