I tried installing #FreeBSD on my desktop again alongside gentoo. The reason why I wasn’t using it was that my router is too far away and there are too many interferences in my apartment for an 802.11n wireless adapter to work properly. I need a 5GHz network.

But I installed it on the SSD that I kept my Steam games in, I wasn’t using it much, and I started setting up FreeBSD, mainly using my phone for the network. I pay for data, I should use it.

I found that they have changed the way drm-kmod works. They’re transitioning from firmware binary files in /boot/firmware to kernel modules for firmware. My RX 6500XT needs the amdgpu driver. It tries to load firmware from /boot/firmware, but it fails. I can see if I can fix that. But for now, I cloned the linux-firmware repo and put it in /boot/firmware. It loads the firmware, except for one special firmware file that is loaded by the PSP.

Now either the PSP isn’t properly loaded, which some messages in /var/crash suggest, or it searches that specific file in the wrong place.

That’s what I’ll be hacking on today 🙂

So I failed in making a functioning graphical FreeBSD install and I lost my games yesterday. But I still see this as an upgrade because I can reinstall my games and use them from gentoo by importing the FreeBSD ZFS pool — without mounting it — and mounting a specific dataset on gentoo that I direct Steam towards. So my games are now on ZFS AND I have a FreeBSD system ready for hacking!
