paraphrasing: when interfacing with hardware, unexpected things may happen (perhaps it is incompletely documented or experiencing run of the mill wrong behaviors that result from interacting with the world, etc); the variety of states that it /could/ be in aren't always possible to predict (and therefore aren't possible to model).. if you /don't/ program defensively against this inevitability, then you assume wrong invariants (hence infinite loop, etc) and have a wrong model (2/2)
