"Stop flying, get the Eurostar" is great advice for Londoners, but if you're in Edinburgh or Glasgow—never mind further north—it puts Paris eight hours away and the cost of the train is about the same as a direct flight to New York. Because everything has to go through a bottleneck at the opposite end of the land mass. (Unless you get the overnight ferry to Rotterdam, which is even slower.)
