Ok, here's the thing.
In the olden days, you had three modifiers: shift, command (functionally equivalent to control, but mapped to super on modern macs), and option (equivalent to and mapped to alt). There was no control key for the first 3-4 years.
Command and/or command+shift were used for most keybinds, option was use by itself as a kind of compose key, and for rarer keybinds, you'd use command and/or shift with option as well.
