At the very least, I would prefer a broadly Latin-I type character set for the default. The specific glyphs for box drawings and the weird symbols in the control code regions I’m not fussed about.

One idea I had was a two layer terminal, with the “bottom” layer using a “graphics” character set and the “top” layer a solid text one.
