I don’t know how long it will take tech oligarchs to realize that they’ve gotten the worse deal with Trump in office…but at some point (too late by then) I think they will. They think they’re using Trump, but Trump has exacted loyalty and command of their tech empires. They may make money in the short term, but they are now at his whim and mercy. And it’s not if, but when, that Trump will betray them; he always does.
But I think “make money in the short term” is exactly why they did this. It’s probably why Bezos told WaPo to not endorse Harris. It’s why Zuck refused to squash misinformation. It’s myopic greed that drove them to their decisions.
But let these oligarchs live long enough, and they might realize that they now live in gilded chains. They probably would have had better lives and more autonomy in the long term if they used their wealth to promote Harris instead, but that takes sustainability thinking, something they’re likely incapable of entertaining.
