Rupert Lowe MP

Our rotten establishment has made the UK such an unappealing place to raise children, many Brits feel like their country is not a suitable place to home a family - for millions, they simply cannot afford it.

That’s resulted in a fertility rate of 1.44 children per woman in 2023. The lowest since records began. Women are having children at later ages, and are having fewer of them. Of course, that is their choice, but should we not at least ask why? Many just don’t bother at all.

This feels like a significant crisis rolling down the road that nobody is talking about. If this carries on, we will die out. That’s just a fact.

What can we actually do to solve it?

Of course, wider tax cuts benefit all. But what specific, pro-family policies?

I like the idea of front-loading child benefits. Paying it upfront in the first few years, when that financial help is really needed rather than when the child is older and at school.

Spousal visa reform, to allow British people to raise their family in their own country, with their foreign spouse. Integrating, contributing, belonging. That is positive immigration. If a Brit falls in love with an Australian, they should not be treated like criminals by our disgraceful Home Office. Save that for the actual illegal migrants.

Further tax breaks for parents/marriage, widen the VAT exemption for child items, more tax advantages for childcare, far more investment in IVF.

Like Hungary, possible tax exemptions for mothers? It all costs, but this is an investment well worth making. There is no choice, to be honest.

Housing. Tackling the immigration crisis obviously links in, but social housing should be for British families, not foreign nationals. If migrants can’t support themselves financially, then that is not our problem. Those houses should be for British families.

These are just thoughts. I don’t have all of the answers, but I do know that the questions need asking.

I’ve been married for decades, with four children - that was the best decision we ever made.

I think it’s desperately sad that young British men and women are unable to do the same for reasons outside of their control.

That needs to change.
