Hmm. From the sensory files, here’s a couple of very early memory snippets I have:
I’m very small, maybe 6. There’s a dress, and I hate it like I hate all dresses but I love it too! It looks so much prettier than the others - deep green and gold patterned. But it’s a cheap polyester kids dress and the elastic bits all dig in and it’s just so itchy!
A little later, I’m old enough to go to school. The cute little girl’s socks have fold over cuffs with lace. If I don’t fold them over, the lace bugs me, but if I do fold them, they slouch and that bugs me in a different way. I cry until they get me plain socks.
From the “princess” side, I was a picky eater. Don’t we all want our safe foods? But we were extremely poor, and things like the generic canned biscuits were always cheaper. As I grew up, I could taste what was better - Land o Lakes butter *tastes better* than the cheapest brand in the scary black and white prison packaging.
Food was always an utter nightmare. I think my parents did more to ruin our relationship at the dinner table than anywhere else. I didn’t want to try gross looking new dishes and it was their hill to die on.
All I wanted was a pair of jeans, a shirt without the itchy tag and choking crew neck, and a Totinos cheese pizza for dinner. Sigh!
