And now there’s this burgeoning narrative that “fact checking websites” and legacy media serve only to run cover for and normalize the extreme right.

This is exactly what happened on the right over the last ten years: erode trust in any media that doesn’t share your worldview, doubt any facts that contradict that worldview, assert that misinformation is excusable when it’s in the service of defeating your political enemies.
