In Mexico, the upper class of the Mexica, Zapotec and other societies was integrated into the colonial elite. That allowed the Spanish crown to dominate a large group of people at a smaller cost and with less resistance. The the Catholic church undertook the long winded task of erasing the old religions and imposing Catholicism as the only creed and Spanish as the only language.
