I was hyped when I first heard about the game, then I actually played it and realized it was deeeeeeply medium at best. It took basic level design they had perfected in their early games of Banjo-kazooie and just... Threw them out. In Banjo-kazooie collectables had multiple purposes, one being to guide the player. You follow the musical notes through levels, you find eggs and feathers near areas you need them, golden feathers are strategically placed near impassable areas you need them...
Meanwhile in yooka-laylee items are randomly placed, hidden behind buildings, no rhyme or reason behind placement, levels are massive and for some reason faster movement abilities drain stamina... It's like the game is actively punishing me for trying to explore, while also purposefully hiding all the things I need to progress... Why do that? Why make such a dumb choice?
I also personally found the story to be kinda meh, it's a bit weird that a video game's entire plot is about how... You shouldn't play video games and should read books? Weird message. I don't like it when a game tries to tell me how to live my life, and it's weird I paid money for a game to tell me to... Not play it...
