I was dismayed to find out that John Mottishaw/Nibs dot com has removed his article explaining how to increase fountain pen ink flow by pushing against the shoulders of the nib, from his website. When I first learned this technique I was able to successfully tweak my own pens. I am sad it's gone because it was such a good resource to refer newbies to online. But there are Youtube videos explaining how to do this, so I just use those.
