I have a book shelf full of old recipe books, some left to me by my mom, that over the years I have slowly disregarded. The reason is that they are from the era when so much packaged food was used. Canned soups, cake mixes, packaged seasonings, corn syrup- a lot of junk I haven't used for years. I have often gone back to them in a wave of holiday nostalgia. I realized that I can re-write most of them to include ingredients I make from scratch, organic foods, etc. In doing so, I also realized that my re-working of the recipes is probably just reverting back to the ORIGINAL recipes that were re-worked by “modern” post-war publishers that thought they were doing a great thing by making all the “convenient” food available and pushing the corporate machine with their advertising and so on. Look up the Kraft food commercials of the 70s. So gross. I will do some of the old traditional recipes for Yule but with MY twist- healthy, local, and homemade ingredients.
