My old man's phone broke down on him. We had an older phone to fall back on, but getting him connected to the network was too much of a pain. At the very least we were able to install https://www.0xchat.com/#/ on his phone to keep in contact with him while we waited on his new phone to get here.

Just about everything else wanted his phone number to work and verify, but this just worked immediately.
